External whitening treatments work on the tooth's outer surface. If discoloration comes from inside the tooth, whether from trauma, injury, or a previous root canal, no amount of whitening toothpaste or bleaching trays will make a difference.

Internal bleaching is a procedure we perform at Advanced Root Canal Specialists that addresses discoloration from the inside out. For the right candidate, this process can restore a darkened tooth without the need for a crown or veneer.

Why Teeth Darken from the Inside

Internal discoloration usually develops after trauma or root canal treatment. When a tooth is injured, pigments from broken-down blood cells can penetrate the tooth structure, leaving a gray, brown, or sometimes pinkish stain. Residual materials from a previous root canal can also cause darkening over time. In some cases, the tooth simply ages from the inside as pulp tissue breaks down.

What Internal Bleaching Involves

Internal bleaching is a conservative procedure in which we work through the tooth's existing access point to address discoloration directly.

Here's what the process looks like:

• Evaluation — We begin with a thorough examination to confirm the tooth is healthy enough for internal bleaching. Not every discolored tooth qualifies, and we'll be straightforward with you about whether this is the right option.
• Placing the bleaching agent — We place a safe bleaching agent inside the tooth and seal it with a temporary filling. The agent works from within the tooth structure over a period of days.
• Follow-up visits — Depending on the degree of discoloration, we may repeat the process over one or more additional visits until we achieve the desired result. 
• Final restoration — Once we obtain the desired shade, we remove the bleaching agent and seal the tooth with a temporary restoration. You will then return to your general dentist for a final restoration.

The number of visits needed varies from patient to patient. We'll give you a realistic estimate based on your specific situation.
