Not every cracked tooth needs a root canal. Treatment depends on whether the crack has affected the pulp, which is the living tissue inside the tooth.
If the pulp becomes inflamed or infected because of the crack, root canal treatment may be needed before the tooth can be restored. If the pulp is healthy and the crack does not involve the inner tooth structure, a crown or other restoration may be sufficient.
